How a trenchless job runs
From the call to a finished pipe.
Call and describe
The symptoms, the yard and any past camera work.
Inspect and clean
A camera confirms the pipe qualifies, and the line is cleaned so the work can proceed.
Dig the access points
A small pit or two, or use of the cleanout, gives access without a long trench.
Line or burst, then test
The new pipe or liner goes in, is connected, and flow is checked.
What changes the price of trenchless sewer repair
Trenchless work does not cost less by default. It costs differently. These are the things that move it.
Method
Lining and pipe bursting use different materials and equipment. A short liner is one thing, a full burst another.
Length and diameter
A longer pipe means more liner or new pipe and a longer day.
Condition of the old pipe
A pipe that needs cleaning, root cutting or spot repairs first adds steps.
Access pits
Depth, soil and what sits above each pit change the digging involved.
Connections
Reconnecting laterals, the cleanout and the main can be simple or detailed.

Trenchless is not always the winner. It suits pipes that are still on the right line and the right slope. A trench suits those that are not. The table compares them side by side so you can see where the trade-offs lie.
| Trench | Trenchless (lining or bursting) | |
|---|---|---|
| Digging | A long open trench along the line | A pit or two at each end, sometimes only the cleanout |
| What gets disturbed | Lawn, paving, roots and plantings above the line | Mostly the ground at the pits |
| Control of slope | High; the new pipe is laid at the grade you choose | Follows the old path; cannot correct a deep sag |
| Works on a collapsed pipe | Yes | Bursting can sometimes; lining cannot |
| Typical time on site | Longer, with backfill and restoration | Often shorter, with less restoration |
| Best for | Bellied lines, collapsed pipes, short runs in open ground | Straight runs under paving, trees or gardens |
The guide on trenchless versus traditional sewer repair goes through the comparison in more detail, and sewer line replacement covers the trench side.
Pipe lining: a new pipe inside the old one
How a liner works
A liner is a flexible tube made of felt or fiberglass and soaked in resin. It is pulled or inverted into the old pipe and inflated against the wall. Heat, steam or light cures the resin, and it hardens into a rigid pipe within the old one. The result seals cracks and open joints and blocks roots from getting back in.
Before lining, the pipe has to be clean. Grease, scale and roots would stop the liner from bonding, so a hydro jetting pass usually comes first. A camera look checks the result. Side connections, like a branch from a bathroom, are reopened after the liner cures, using a cutter.
A liner reduces the inside diameter slightly. In most cases that does not slow the flow, because the new surface is smooth, but it is one reason lining suits some pipes better than others.
Clean the pipe
Jet away grease, scale and roots.
Insert the liner
A resin-soaked tube goes in through an access point.
Cure it
Heat, steam or light hardens the resin.
Reopen the branches
A cutter restores each connection, then a camera confirms.
Pipe bursting: a new pipe pulled through the old one
When the old pipe has to go
Pipe bursting replaces the old pipe, not just lines it. A pit is dug at each end of the run. A bursting head, with a new pipe attached behind it, is pulled through the old pipe. The head fractures the old pipe outward into the soil and the new pipe takes its place.
It is a good fit when a pipe is too damaged for a liner but the path is straight. The new pipe is usually a continuous, jointless plastic, which resists roots. It can often be a size larger than the old one.
The method needs space for the pits and a clear path. Nearby utilities, a tight clearance to other pipes or hard objects in the soil can complicate it. Buried lines have to be located and marked first. A plumber can explain how that works.
- Straight pathBursting follows the old route; it cannot correct a bend.
- Space for two pitsOne at each end of the run.
- Utilities markedGas, water and power lines nearby need to be located.
- Soil is workableLarge rocks or old concrete can stop a head.
- New connectionsEach lateral is reconnected afterward.
Which pipes qualify for trenchless work
The camera decides, not the brochure
Whether trenchless works depends on three things: the shape of the pipe, its path, and what is around it. A pipe that is cracked but still round and in line is a lining candidate. A pipe that is broken along its length but runs straight is a bursting candidate. A pipe that has sagged, collapsed in the middle, or turned sharply needs a trench, at least in part.
Often a job combines methods. A short collapsed stretch is dug and replaced, and the remaining run is lined. Both ends tie to the same point, so the repair is continuous.
Without a sewer camera inspection, no one can say which applies. A claim made before the camera has gone in is a guess.
| Camera finding | Likely route |
|---|---|
| Cracks, open joints, pipe still round | Lining |
| Broken or crumbling along a straight run | Pipe bursting |
| Deep sag holding water | Trench the sag |
| Collapse at a bend | Trench the bend, line the rest |
| Heavy roots at joints | Clean, then line |
When trenchless is not an option
Be wary of anyone who says it always works
Trenchless has real limits. It cannot fix a sag, since both lining and bursting follow the old grade. It cannot repair a pipe that has collapsed so completely that nothing can pass. It struggles where the pipe takes an abrupt bend. It can also be unsuitable where the path is too close to other buried lines.
The other limit is cost. In a short run through open lawn, a trench can cost the same or less than a trenchless job, and give a better result. The main saving comes when a trench would have to cut paving, tree roots or a landscaped yard.
Also ask what happens at the ends. The access pits are small, but they still need backfilling and some surface repair.
- Deep sagNeither method fixes the grade.
- Total collapseNo path for a liner or a head.
- Tight bendsA liner can wrinkle; a head can jam.
- Short run in open lawnA trench may cost the same or less.
- Unknown utilities nearbyLocate them first.
What the new pipe connects to in Lithia
Sewer or septic, then method
Lithia is an unincorporated community in Hillsborough County, so water and wastewater service are county-run or private. Some houses connect to a sewer and some use septic. The county names septic tanks as the main on-site method in its rural areas and has run septic-to-sewer conversions in a list of named places that does not include Lithia.
For a trenchless job, it changes the far end. On a sewered home, the pipe ends at the connection to the main. On septic, it ends at the tank. The liner or new pipe is fitted to whichever it is. Check your bill, ask the county, and tell the person on the call.
| Home type | Where the work ends |
|---|---|
| Public sewer | At the connection to the main |
| Septic | At the tank inlet |
| Unsure | Find out first |
If the line is backing up before any plan is made
Stop using water
Nothing new should go down the line.
Keep people clear
Sewage in the house is a health hazard. Protect children and pets.
Avoid drain chemicals
They can interfere with a liner and harm skin.
Do not open the cleanout cap
Backed-up waste can spill out across the yard.
Call any hour

A backup first needs clearing, then inspecting.
The line has to be cleared and looked at before any trenchless plan is made. The first visit is about getting the water moving again.
