Call now, 24/7(656) 254-8200Why the mailing name can send you to the wrong place
Two ZIP codes, two other town names
Bloomingdale is an unincorporated census-designated place in east-central Hillsborough County, about 16 miles southeast of downtown Tampa. The 2020 census counted 22,947 people and 8,366 housing units, 3.6 percent of them vacant. Its ZIP codes are 33511, where the mailing address says Brandon, and 33596, where it says Valrico. Neighboring places are Brandon to the north, Valrico to the northeast, FishHawk to the southeast and Riverview to the southwest.
That mailing practice is why an online lookup can send you to the wrong page. A utility, a sewer map or a county notice is tied to your service address, not to the mailing city. When you call about a plumber in Bloomingdale, FL, give the street name and number. If you are looking up a water report, enter the full address, not the town.
| What you use | What it can mislead | Better practice |
|---|---|---|
| Mailing city on a bill | Says Brandon or Valrico | Use the service address |
| ZIP code lookup | May match several systems | Use the street address |
| Neighbor’s advice | The next street may differ | Check your own bill |
| A listing for Brandon or Valrico | May not cover Bloomingdale streets | Ask the utility directly |

A regional blend, and what is not known
What the County reports cover
Hillsborough County Water Resources operates eleven community public drinking water systems, each with its own report, and residents find theirs by entering an address in the County’s interactive map. The County’s 2025 South-Central and Northwest reports say most customers receive water from the regional supply system, Tampa Bay Water. Its 2025 blend was 63.1 percent groundwater, 30.5 percent river water and 6.4 percent desalinated seawater. The County’s own water also relies on a Lithia Water Treatment Plant, listed as a potable water facility.
Which system serves a given street, whether a home is on County water, a private well or another provider, and how hard the water is all depend on the address. For a hardness number, call the provider named on your bill or look for the mineral section of its yearly water report. Your water bill also names your provider.
| Question | Answer on this page | Where to get it |
|---|---|---|
| Who supplies my street? | Depends on the address | Your bill, or the County’s address map |
| Is my water hard? | Depends on the supply | The utility, or a home test |
| Is any home groundwater-only? | Depends on the address | The utility |
| Do I have a private well? | Depends on the address | Look for a casing and tank |
Scale, taste and treatment
Until you have a hardness figure for your address, use your fixtures. White crust on aerators, a rumbling heater or spotted glassware suggest minerals. The hard water guide explains what to look for. For treatment see water softener installation and water filtration. A test strip or the utility gives you the number before you spend.
Test before you buy
Treatment equipment is sized to your water. Without a number from the utility or a test, any recommendation is a guess.
Sewer or septic: it depends on your parcel
What applies to your parcel
The County’s South-Central wastewater service area lists Apollo Beach, Brandon, Gibsonton, Riverview, Ruskin, Seffner, Sun City, Valrico and Wimauma, served by three treatment plants: South County Regional, Valrico and Falkenburg. Bloomingdale is not on that list, and this page does not infer its sewer status either way. A County study identified many single-family parcels inside its Urban Service Area that are not on sewer. The County’s septic-to-sewer conversions name Gibsonton, Palm River, Ruskin, Wimauma and the University Area. Bloomingdale is not named.
If you do not know whether your home has sewer or septic, ask the County. For a clog, clogged drain, drain cleaning and hydro jetting apply. For a repeat backup, sewer camera inspection and sewer line repair are next.

Reclaimed water, sprinklers and backflow
Reclaimed water is not the same as the tap
County reclaimed water is treated wastewater used for irrigation. The County says availability is case-by-case and limited to certain areas, and it has a phone line and an email address for address checks. In May 2024 it paused reclaimed service in a south-county area because of a plant problem, and drinking water was unaffected. Service returned a few days later.
If you have a reclaimed connection, keep it apart from the house plumbing. If you have sprinklers on the potable supply, a backflow device may be involved. Backflow testing explains the device and the test. A leak in an irrigation line can run unseen, and leak detection finds it. Water line repair covers the supply side.
| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| Is reclaimed water safe to drink? | No. It is for irrigation only. |
| Can any address get it? | No. The County decides case-by-case. |
| Can it be paused? | Yes. It was, for a south-county area, in May 2024. |
| Does a pause affect tap water? | The County said drinking water was unaffected. |
What to do when a boil-water notice is issued
Follow the County first
A main break can drop pressure and lead to a boil-water notice. The County publishes those notices, and its instructions override anything here. In general, boil water as instructed before drinking, brushing teeth or making ice. After the notice lifts, run cold taps for a few minutes, flush toilets, and replace water filter cartridges if the maker advises. If a heater tank went through a pressure loss, check for drips. The low water pressure page covers pressure that does not recover.
- Read the County noticeIt names the area and the steps.
- Boil as directedNot just heat. Follow the time stated.
- Run taps after it liftsClear stale water from the lines.
- Check the heaterLook for drips after pressure swings.
For a pipe that failed, see burst pipe repair and the burst pipe guide.
