What to Do When a Pipe Bursts
Knowing what to do when a pipe bursts means acting in order: get clear, shut off the main, cut power if it is safe, then call. This guide covers the first minutes and the cleanup that follows.
Emergency? Call now, 24/7(656) 254-8200- Stay clear of electricalWater and outlets or the panel do not mix.
- Shut the main valveTurn it clockwise until it stops.
- Drain, then callOpen low taps, park the heater and phone a plumber.
What to do when a pipe bursts, in short
- Stay away from water near electricityPanel, outlets and appliances are the danger.
- Close the main valveClockwise until it stops. This is the step that saves the house.
- Open low taps and park the water heaterDrains the lines and avoids heating an empty tank.
- Move belongings, photograph, dryLimit the loss and record it.
- Call a plumber right awayOpen 24/7, same-day service is available.
What to do when a pipe bursts: the first ten minutes
A burst pipe can pour a bathtub’s worth of water into the house every few minutes. What you do first matters more than what you do later, so work through these in order.
Get yourself and others clear
If water is near outlets, appliances or the electrical panel, keep away from it. Never stand in standing water and touch anything electrical.
Shut off the water at the main
Turn the main valve clockwise until it stops. If you do not know where it is, see how to shut off your main water valve.
Cut power to the wet area, only if it is safe
If the breaker panel is dry and you can reach it without crossing water, switch off the circuits for the affected area. If you cannot, leave it and call your electric utility or 911.
Call a plumber
Say that a pipe has burst, where, and that the main is off. Same-day service is available, and the line is open 24/7.
Do not touch the panel if water is near it
If water is reaching the breaker panel or outlets are sparking, do not go near. Leave the house if the water is rising, then call 911 and your electric utility from outside.
After the main is off: drain the system and protect the heater
Closing the main stops new water, but the pipes still hold water that can keep running. A few quick steps empty them and prevent a second problem.
Drain the lines and park the water heater
Open a tap on the lowest level of the house, then one upstairs, to let the remaining water out and take pressure off the broken pipe. Flush the toilets once to empty the tanks. This often slows the leak to a trickle.
Then deal with the water heater. If the main is off and you let the hot taps drain, a gas or electric heater can run with no water in the tank, which can damage it. Switch off the heater’s power at the breaker or set the gas control to pilot. A burst pipe on the cold side is not the only way to end up with a damaged heater, so do not skip this. Our water heater repair page covers what to do if the heater was affected.
- Lowest tap on the ground floorOpen it to relieve pressure and drain pipes.
- A tap on the upper floorReleases the water held higher up.
- Flush toilets onceEmpties the tank and the supply.
- Water heater: off at the breaker or to pilotPrevents heating with no water.
- Leave the main closedDo not reopen until a plumber says so.
Which pipe burst? What it looks like and what it means
The location changes the urgency and who you call first. These are the common cases.
| Where you see water | Likely source | Urgency | Your move |
|---|---|---|---|
| Spraying from a wall or ceiling | Supply line under pressure | Urgent | Main off at once, then call |
| Ceiling bulging or dripping | Water pooling above | Urgent | Main off; do not stand beneath the bulge |
| Wet spot in the yard, soggy ground | Buried supply line | Urgent | Main off and call; see water line repair |
| Water around the water heater | Heater connection or tank | Urgent | Heater off, cold supply to it closed |
| Under a sink | Supply line or trap | Soon | Close the fixture valve |
| Outside hose bib | Cracked bib or line behind it | Soon | Close the shutoff inside, if any |
If the break is outside and between the meter and the house, closing the house valve may not stop it. Close the meter valve if you can, and call. Our pages for burst pipe repair and water line repair cover both situations.
Limit the damage until help arrives
You cannot fix the pipe, but you can keep the loss from growing. Think of it as triage for the house.
Move, mop and photograph
Lift small furniture, rugs and electronics out of the wet area. Use towels, mops and a wet-dry vacuum to pull up standing water. Open windows and run fans or a dehumidifier to start drying the air, but keep the fans away from any wet outlet.
Take photos and short video of the damage before you move or clean much of it, and again afterward. Note the time you noticed it and the time you shut the water off. These records help later, whatever you decide to do about insurance. Read the general guide on insurance and burst pipes, then read your own policy and call your insurer. This site cannot say what any policy covers.
If a ceiling is sagging with water, do not stand under it. Poking a small hole to let the water drain into a bucket can prevent a collapse, but only do so if it is safe and you can stand clear.
| Task | Why | Tip |
|---|---|---|
| Lift furniture and electronics | Prevents lasting damage | Put foil or plastic under legs on wet floors |
| Remove standing water | Stops it soaking in | A wet-dry vacuum beats towels |
| Run fans and open windows | Starts drying | Keep cords out of the water |
| Photograph the damage | Records the loss | Take dated photos and video |
| Pull up soaked rugs | Prevents mold underneath | Hang them outside to dry |
Why pipes burst, and how common it is
How common is it for a water line to break? No one tracks it for a single house, but the causes are well known.
| Cause | How it breaks the pipe | Usual warning |
|---|---|---|
| Corrosion and age | The wall thins until it fails under pressure | Rusty water, pinhole leaks, stains |
| High water pressure | Constant strain finds a weak joint | Banging pipes, a dripping relief valve |
| Freezing | Ice expands in an exposed pipe | A cold snap and slow flow, rare in Florida |
| Shifting ground | Soil movement bends or cracks a line | New cracks, a wet patch in the yard |
| Roots and digging | Roots or a shovel crush or cut a line | Low pressure, a soggy spot |
| A poor joint or defect | A fitting gives way | A slow drip that gets worse |
Florida is not immune to cold. An occasional hard freeze can burst exposed outdoor lines, irrigation backflow assemblies and hose bibs that are not covered. If a freeze is forecast, cover exposed pipes and fittings, and let a trickle run if advised. Heavy storms add their own risks, since flooding and ground movement can break buried lines. For the signs a pipe is wearing out, see signs of corroded pipes.
What a plumber does about a burst pipe
The plumber’s job is to stop the loss, find the real cause and put in a repair that lasts.
Confirm the water is off
The plumber checks the shutoff, drains what is left and makes the area safe to work in.
Open and expose the break
Drywall, a ceiling section or soil is opened to reach the damaged pipe.
Cut out the damaged section
The failed piece is removed and a new section joined in with proper fittings.
Test before closing up
The line is brought back to pressure and checked for leaks before the wall is closed.
One burst can mean the rest of that pipe is the same age and condition. Ask whether the plumber sees signs of more weak spots. A single repair is the right answer for one flaw, while several can point to repiping. Read pipe repair for the smaller jobs.
After the repair: drying, water quality and cost
A repaired pipe is not the end. Water left behind causes the next problem.
Dry the structure, check the water, understand the bill
Wet drywall, insulation and flooring need drying within a day or two to avoid mold. If more than a small area is soaked, ask a water-damage company or your insurer about drying equipment. Do not close up a wall that is still damp.
If the break was on a public main, or a water main break affected your area, your utility may issue a boil-water notice. Follow it until the utility says the water is safe. After the supply returns, run cold taps for a few minutes to clear air and sediment.
What does it cost to fix a burst pipe? That depends on which pipe, how deep, how much has to be opened and restored. Ask about pricing when you call and say where the water is coming from.
- Dry within a day or twoFans, dehumidifier and open windows.
- Check for hidden wet insulationIt holds water long after the surface dries.
- Follow any boil-water noticeUntil the utility says to stop.
- Flush cold taps when water returnsClears air and loose sediment.
- Watch for mold smellA week later is when it shows.
Mistakes that make a burst pipe worse
In a panic, people do things that feel helpful and cost them later. This is the short list of what to skip.
| Mistake | Why it backfires | Do this instead |
|---|---|---|
| Hunting for the leak before closing the main | Every minute adds more water to the floor | Close the main first, then look |
| Wading into water to reach the panel | Electric shock is the real danger in a flooded room | Stay out and call 911 and the electric utility |
| Plugging the break with tape or putty | It rarely holds against line pressure and hides the damage | Leave the temporary fix to a plumber with a clamp or cap |
| Running the water heater with the main off | It can run with no water in the tank | Switch it off or set gas to pilot |
| Using a ceiling fixture below a bulge | Water in a light fitting can short and drop the ceiling | Leave the light off, stand clear |
| Reopening the main to test | A weak repair can fail again | Wait for the plumber to test the line |
| Closing up a wet wall | Trapped moisture grows mold | Dry it first and check with a moisture meter |
The clamp point is worth a word. Pipe repair clamps and push-fit caps are sold in stores, and a handy homeowner can sometimes slow a leak with one. Treat that as a holding step until a plumber looks, because a clamp on a corroded pipe can fail when the pipe around it gives way.
Be ready before the next one: storms, travel and a quick plan
A burst pipe is far less damaging in a house where everyone knows the drill. Florida gives you a reason to rehearse every year.
Three habits that pay off in storm season
Before a hurricane or a long storm, you may leave the house for days. Closing the main valve before you go means a failed hose or a line damaged in the storm cannot flood an empty house. Switch off the water heater too if you will be away. When you return, open the main slowly and walk the house looking for drips before you relax.
After a storm, ground movement and fallen trees can damage buried lines, so a high bill or low pressure after a storm is worth a check. If the supply was interrupted, flush the lines when it returns and follow any notice from the utility. Older lines are the likeliest to fail under the strain. If yours are due for a look, read repiping a house: signs and cost.
Keep a small kit by the main: a flashlight, a valve key or wrench if your meter box needs one, a roll of towels and a card with the plumber’s number and your meter location. The point is that a stressed family member can follow it at two in the morning. If you are choosing someone to call before you need them, how to choose a plumber lists what to look for.
- Know where the main isWalk everyone in the house to it once.
- Practice turning itA stiff valve found during an emergency costs time.
- Close it before you travelEspecially before leaving for a storm.
- Keep a flashlight and towels near itPower may be out when you need it.
- Save the plumber’s numberOpen 24/7, one number, no forms.

Questions about what to do when a pipe bursts
What to do when a pipe bursts and water is already on the floor?
Stay clear of electricity, close the main valve, open low taps to drain the lines and switch off the water heater. Move belongings out of the wet area, photograph the damage and call a plumber.
How common is it for a water line to break?
No single number applies to a house. Corrosion, high pressure, ground movement, roots and occasional cold snaps all cause breaks. Signs of age, such as pinhole leaks or rusty water, point to higher risk.
How much does it usually cost to fix a burst pipe?
It depends on which pipe failed, how deep and how much has to be opened and repaired. A visible pipe under a sink is a short job. Ask about pricing when you call and say where the water is coming from.
Will insurance cover a burst water pipe?
Policies differ, so read yours and call your insurer. This site cannot say what any policy covers. See the insurance guide for general information, and keep photos and notes.
Is it safe to turn the power off when a pipe bursts?
Only if the panel is dry and you can reach it without crossing water. If water is near the panel or outlets, stay out and call 911 and your electric utility from outside.
Should I drain the pipes after shutting off the water?
Yes. Open a low tap and an upper tap, flush the toilets once and switch off the water heater. This relieves pressure and keeps the heater from running dry.
What if I cannot find the main valve?
Try the meter box at the street and its valve, which usually needs a tool. Call the plumber and the water utility. Our main valve guide shows where to look.
Can I wait until morning to call?
With the main closed, a small leak may hold, but wet drywall and flooring begin to deteriorate quickly. The line is open 24/7 and same-day service is available, so call now and describe what you see.
When is a boil-water notice issued?
Utilities issue them when a main break or loss of pressure could let contamination in. Follow your utility’s notice until it says the water is safe.
